Connect ChatGPT and Codex
Personal plans and Business workspaces, set up on chatgpt.com in a browser; it then works in the ChatGPT desktop app and in Codex.
Steps
Use chatgpt.com in a web browser for these steps. The ChatGPT desktop app can add the server, but GlobalBrain then doesn't appear among your apps or in a chat's + menu. Once it's set up on the web, the desktop app and Codex use it too.
ChatGPT Plus or Pro
- 1
On chatgpt.com, open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
- 2
Back in Apps & Connectors, choose Create. Name it GlobalBrain, paste this address as the MCP server URL, set authentication to OAuth, confirm you trust it, and choose Create.
https://mcp-staging.global-brain.ai/mcp
- 3
The GlobalBrain sign-in page opens. Enter your email and choose Email me a sign-in link. Then either follow the link in the email or type the code from it on the page.
New to GlobalBrain? The email creates your account, and you set up your brain in about a minute. Then name the connection (such as “ChatGPT”; its saved thoughts are labelled with it) and choose Approve.
- 4
Tell ChatGPT how to use it. In Settings → Personalization → Custom instructions, paste:
GlobalBrain is my shared memory across all my AI tools. Use its tools without waiting to be asked. This tool's name is: ChatGPT. Search first. Before answering about my work, decisions, preferences or plans, call search_thoughts. Capture. When something is worth keeping (a decision, insight, plan, open question, how-to or preference), search first to avoid duplicates, then call capture_thought with: - content: self-contained, readable by another AI later - kind: observation, hypothesis, decision, preference, question, procedure or reference - title: 5 to 10 words - producer_client: ChatGPT Link. If a thought builds on, backs up, contradicts, replaces or duplicates another, call add_relationship with relationship_type derived_from, supports, contradicts, supersedes, elaborates or duplicate_of. Flag for use. To mark a thought for later work, call add_use with purpose task, research_input, reference, architecture_proposal or blog_candidate. Retire. When a decision is replaced, call update_lifecycle on the old thought with lifecycle_status superseded and a short reason.
- 5
Check it works: in a new chat, turn on GlobalBrain from the + menu, then ask “What's my GlobalBrain connection status?” It answers with your brain's name and the name this connection saves under.
ChatGPT Business or Enterprise
A workspace admin adds GlobalBrain for the workspace, then each person activates it for themselves. Your own Settings won't offer to create it. If you're the admin, do both parts.
The admin, once
- 1
On admin.openai.com, open Admin Console → Plugins and choose Add.
- 2
In New custom plugin, name it GlobalBrain. Under Connection, choose Server URL and paste this address. Set Authentication to OAuth and leave the advanced authentication settings as they are. Tick I understand and want to continue, then choose Create.

- 1
On chatgpt.com, open Settings → Plugins → GlobalBrain and choose Activate. ChatGPT shows a couple of warnings to open, read and accept. If it asks you to sign in, use your own GlobalBrain account, so you reach only your own brain.
Skip this and GlobalBrain still appears in a chat's + menu, but ChatGPT reports its tools as unavailable.

Codex
- 1
Connect ChatGPT first (above), with the same account. Codex has no setup of its own: it uses the connectors you created on chatgpt.com.
- 2
In the Codex app, GlobalBrain appears under Sources. Make sure it's on.
- 3
Check it works: in a Codex chat, ask “What's my GlobalBrain connection status?” It answers with your brain's name and the name this connection saves under.
Good to know
- Ask for GlobalBrain by name, such as “search GlobalBrain for…”. Codex may look in every source that's on, including other memory tools.
- ChatGPT on the web may show results as cards or charts, while the desktop app shows the text. It's the same data; each app chooses how to show it.
- If ChatGPT keeps installing an older connector with the same name instead of the new one, give the new one another name, such as GlobalBrain. The name is only a label: your thoughts are in GlobalBrain, so nothing is lost. Move any projects, GPTs or scheduled tasks to the new one, then remove the old one.
- Connected with a key instead of signing in? In a Business or Enterprise workspace, everyone the connector is available to reaches your brain with your key. Make it available only to you, and turn off Allow site visitors.
